Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving Day with your home team, I sure did! Can you believe it’s almost 2023? For me 2022 has been challenging and fun. It’s been amazing to watch my family’s Retreat Ranch continue to expand. It’s also been pretty awesome to get back out there to speak with some of you face to face. I love my job and I love helping you all develop your leadership skills and build a stronger team for your organization. It’s now time to start planning for 2023, so here are my top three leadership goals for 2023.
The Importance of Logical Game Planning
As a leader, having a clear vision for yourself and your team is essential for developing or building on strategic goals. It’s also necessary to help you evaluate at the end of the year what has been achieved and what needs to be improved upon. When setting your leadership goals for 2023, try to keep the number of goals within reason and build your vision around that.
A word to the wise, you’ve got to be LOGICAL in how you approach these plans. Here’s my logic to achievement:
There are many people who have achieved something never once done before. Had they believed themselves incapable of succeeding where all others had failed, they would not have done the unthinkable. They would not have sought greatness and lost it. They would not have tried. They would not have reached out. On the contrary, they succeeded in large part because they believed in themselves, and that greatness was in their reach.
Alright, that being said, let me give you my three best suggestions to keep in mind when setting those logical, strategic, SMART goals.
Here’s Your Leader’s 2023 Game Plan
Tip One
Focus on setting three goals; no this is not an arbitrary number. I say three and not five or ten because the more goals or priorities you have the less focused on each you’ll become. You need to be laser focused. Plus, each of these goals do come with its own mini-objectives, trust this is enough to keep the best and smartest leader occupied for the year.
Tip 2
Visibility creates accountability. You know accountability is one of my favorite words when it comes to strategy planning. Why? Because it works and if no one’s being held accountable, what’s the motive for anyone, including you, to get the job done? NADA!
Make your goals visible by sharing them with LIMs (Leaders in the middle), peers and team members. This way, it’s so present, they can’t come up with excuses not to be accountable.
When your goals are visible to the organization, it’s top of mind for the WHOLE team. I mean it needs to be tip of the tongue! Visibility = Better Accountability.
What the hell does this all achieve? It means you, me and the team talk about every day to everybody. We focus on it with all our mental and physical efforts. I got one more for ya:
Tip of Tongue creates top of mind.
Tip 3
Create the game plan. Goals without logical initiatives and efforts are just dreams and ideas. Don’t fall in the “New Year’s Resolution” trap of setting goals that deep down you know you’ll never be able to fully commit to achieving. It’s a waste of time and it can be demotivating, when in reality it’s just an empty goal. Nah, you can do way better! You’ve got to put a plan together for you and your team.
Share your plan and work your plan.
BONUS TIP
Don’t be realistic, be logical. Yeah, we’re back here again but don’t roll your eyes at me! I can’t say this enough – being realistic limits us. Realism is based on what has previously been achieved or what we think can be done, but logical is based on opportunity, effort, and time. Dream a little, that’s how all the greatest businesses succeed- see Apple, Microsoft and dare I say Facebook.
Someone has to be number one why not YOU? Don’t let others influence you or limit you. Don’t plan for bad times or assume the worst.
Be BOLD in your goals and be committed to your plan.
Oh yeah, to do this remember you’ve got to block the external noise.
Final Thoughts on Setting Your Leadership Goals for 2023
Here’s a LOGICAL FACT- 2023 can be our biggest year ever!
I know for me it absolutely will be, no matter what happens around me, the government, the economy, inflation, competition, etc., I dream big always, and focus on a positive outcome. I encourage you to do the same.
Haha, as I write this, I can hear my wife Shannon saying I’m manifesting these goals into reality. Whatever jives your turkey, just understand this is NOT about practicing blind optimism. What is it then?
It’s all about understanding that we can’t control everything that happens, but we can control our response and actions.
